about

Original programme note:

Memories of the Waves at Big Sur is a piece inspired by the soundscape of huge breakers from the pacific hitting the California coastline. It's an experiment in attempting to render the experience of standing on the beach surrounded by the continual enveloping boom of the waves and ethereal howling of the wind. I'm interested in how we record soundscapes and the piece tries to approximate the distortion of perspective that our imperfect memories introduce. If field recordings are the equivalent of photographs, then transcribing the sounds like this is perhaps akin to sketching from memory, or scribbling descriptions in a notebook.

Nov 2022 note:

Composed as part of my electroacoustic studies. I have fond memories of being in the University studio, after hours, playing with the piano and feeling like I was really composing.

These two pieces (along with The Singing Wires of Point Reyes) were both inspired by a trip to California, following in the footsteps of Jack Kerouac around San Francisco and Berkley. I made many field recordings and - as is often the case when one is out of their immediate environment - my awareness of the sounds around me were heightened.
