about

First released in 2005 on my noughties CDr label Quiet Records.

Original sleeve note:

"Ian Baxter played processed Hohner EK61 Electric Piano then assembled the layers in his studio. The first four tracks build up layer by layer using the same piece of recorded improvisation. The appendix presents each layer individually

The cover picture is inspired by a zine by Mark Pawson."

I have hazy memories of recording this on New Years Day 2005 in my 'studio' (in reality, my rented room), the piano was this ancient thing with full size keys and a huge vinyl bag so you could carry it to gigs. It had a very electronic sound and I think was totally polyphonic (an oscillator of some kind behind every key like a non-mechnical Rhodes) I sort of regret selling it now. Mad vintage things seemed easy to come by back then.

I'm not sure where the idea of presenting the individual layers came from but I received some compliments on that innovation. I think perhaps I had in the back of my mind that with multiple copies you could remix the layers as you wished. One of the amusing things to note looking back is not editing out the click at the start of the recording as I sat down to play - I was crazy about leaving these 'vérité' details on recordings at the time.

I see from my archive file names that the original sleeve was printed on tracing paper. I still have the zines book somewhere where I encountered Mark Pawson's handmade book of plug wiring diagrams. You can read about that here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die-Cut_Plug_Wiring_Diagram_Book - I'm not sure if 'inspired' quite covers it, something more like 'the cover picture completely rips off..." might be more accurate - I was young and daft!

about

Ian Baxter Sheffield, UK

I'm a sound artist based in Sheffield UK. My primary interest is in the creation of slowly evolving soundscapes. This takes in aspects of traditional electro-acoustic composition and an interest in getting my hands dirty with electronics and computer programming. I often seek to compose in a way where the outcome is not necessarily foreseen (one definition of experimental music) ... more
